A goal in each half from Sadiq Auwal and substitute Ibrahim Yahaya gave a resurgent Bayelsa United a 2-1 victory over Akwa United in a 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 17 fixture, decided at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa.
Chijioke Alaekwe put the "Promise Keepers" ahead in the 23rd minute from Paschal Onunze's low cross, which beat Bayelsa United goalkeeper Godgift Elkanah, who has been phenomenal this season for the Prosperity Boys.

Forward Sadiq Auwal restored parity for the hosts in the 41st minute when Hassan Oladimeji sprinted past Akwa United players to find Simon Daniel at the edge of the danger zone. Daniel then intelligently found Auwal, who finished with a sublime shot after missing a close-range effort in the opening minutes of the game.
Apparently not satisfied with the scoreline, Bayelsa United's experienced Technical Adviser, Ladan Bosso, introduced midfielder Ibrahim Yahaya for Rabiu Abdullahi, and Fuluwa Akpokabowei replaced Emo James in the 63rd minute.
In the 79th minute, Akpokabowei connected with a ball from Simon Daniel, but his shot was off target. However, Ibrahim Yahaya capitalized on the rebound, heading the ball into the net to give the Prosperity Boys the lead.
The victory extended Bayelsa United's unbeaten run to four games since their defeat to Shooting Stars on November 25, 2024, at the Lekan Salami Stadium. Their next match is against Remo Stars this weekend.
Bayelsa United's Technical Adviser, Ladan Bosso, noted that the victory was not a true reflection of the scoreline, adding that his team could have been three goals up in the first half. He also stated that the team's focus has now shifted to their upcoming match against Remo Stars at Ikenne.
Akwa United's interim coach, Umar Abdullahi, said the performance of the team was the best they had shown in recent times. He pointed out that their aim was to secure the maximum three points in Yenagoa.
