Eight-time and reigning NPFL champions, Rangers International FC, on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024, in a 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 16 fixture, defeated high-flying Rivers United FC with a lone goal from a header by the team's captain, Chinemerem Ugwueze.
The head coach of the ‘Flying Antelopes’, Ekeh Ekenedilichukwu, gave starts to Agu Kenechukwu, Ikenna Stephen, and Hillary Ekawu in the absence of the Super Eagles B team invitees, while retaining the other players who had secured a valuable draw in Aba midweek, and the squad did not disappoint.

The visitors, under coach Finidi George, took the fight to the home side after the kickoff but encountered stiff resistance from the home team's defense, marshaled by Austin Opara, Kenneth Igboke, Effimi Nsi, and Ikenna Stephen.
A long throw-in from Hillary Ekawu at the 15th minute was nodded in by captain Chinemerem Ugwueze, as the large crowd that gathered for the top-of-the-table fixture erupted in celebration.
In the 35th minute, Rangers almost extended their lead when Godwin Obaje set up Hillary Ekawu, but the attacking midfielder’s left-footed shot missed the target by a few inches, with the home team's dugout lamenting the missed opportunity, while the visitors breathed a sigh of relief.
In the second half, Coach Finidi made three substitutions, which helped push the home side into a defensive shell. Despite having a large percentage of possession, Rivers United failed to break through the resolute defense of the home side. The visitors' goalkeeper, however, was the busier of the two shot-stoppers, as he did well to stop several attempts from the attacking trio of Frank Uwumiro, Godwin Obaje, and substitute Daniel Onyia.
With the win, Rangers now occupy 3rd place in the 20-team log with 27 points from 16 matches, extending their unbeaten run to nine matches. They will next face Katsina United on Sunday, Dec. 15, at the Muhammad Dikko Stadium, Katsina, Katsina State.
