2024/2025 NPFL: Ikorodu City FC's goal poacher dreams big

Posted : 03 December 2024

Following their scintillating performances during a six-match unbeaten streak, Ikorodu City FC's goal poacher, ThankGod Chilaka, expressed his desire for his team to aim higher by contesting for the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) crown.

Chilaka stated that he and his teammates are now focused on winning the league title.

Recall that the Oga Boys pulled off a dramatic and largely unexpected 4-1 thrashing of visiting Akwa United of Uyo on Sunday.

The matchday 15 victory at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos Island, propelled Ikorodu City to third place on the NPFL table. The team has now gone six consecutive matches without defeat.

This marks a significant turnaround from their earlier position at the bottom of the table. On September 28th, Chilaka scored their first-ever goal in the NPFL, but the team still lost 2-1 at home to Nasarawa United of Lafia in a matchday 5 fixture.

The story has now come full circle, with Coach Nurudeen Areworo's side climbing to an all-time high. Chilaka says the team has been inspired by newfound zeal and confidence, positioning them as plausible champions.

“We saw it coming because we knew how we had been planning for the game,” said the Nordic Football Academy product.

“We fought with all our strength and did everything to ensure we got the three points at home.”

He also gave thanks to God for the amazing result and expressed optimism that Ikorodu City would continue to grow stronger as the season builds to a crescendo.

“We really thank God for everything He has done for us. This victory brings joy, good feelings, and happiness.

“It inspires us to keep going and to keep fighting hard so that we will never retreat,” Chilaka added with delight.

He concluded with a confident affirmation that the Ikorodu-based NPFL debutants can now start considering themselves potential champions in their first-ever contest among top-flight Nigerian league teams.

“Now we have lifted ourselves higher on the table than before.

“So, we are planning to win the league title. We will train hard and keep fighting.

“We will work harder and plan better to reach the top of the table. That is our programme and our plan,” Chilaka declared.
