2024/2025 NPFL: Bayelsa Govt. spits fire over poor form of Prosperity Boys

Posted : 07 November 2024

The Bayelsa State government has threatened to ban the state-owned Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) club, Bayelsa United, if the team fails to survive the relegation battle by the end of the season.

In a bid to end the team's poor performance, the state government has also issued a two-match ultimatum to the coaching staff.

The Commissioner for Sports Development, Daniel Igali, made this known during a meeting with the coaches and management of Bayelsa United in Yenagoa, the state capital.

Igali emphasized that the ultimatum was necessary due to the team's continued inability to secure wins, stating that the government cannot continue to fold its arms and watch things worsen despite providing significant financial support.

According to him, the two-game ultimatum will begin this weekend in Port Harcourt against Rivers United and Katsina United. Failure to win both matches will result in the dismissal of the entire technical crew. He also pointed out that any player who does not deserve to be in the team will be given the marching orders.

He explained that the governor has made it clear that if the team is relegated, it will be disbanded, urging the players and coaching staff to start winning.

"This team has only two games to improve its position, and if we fail to do this, it will not only affect the technical adviser but the entire team. Any player who doesn't deserve to be in the team will be shown the exit door," Igali stated.

The commissioner also expressed disappointment over Ladan Bosso's statement during the post-match interview after the game against Enyimba on Sunday at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa. Igali found the statement disheartening and unacceptable, especially as the government funds Bayelsa United and Bayelsa Queens.

He directed the club's chairman, Dr. Tarilaye Nwankwe, to punish Bosso or face sanctions from the government, emphasizing that it is not the duty of a coach to ridicule the government in public, which is unacceptable to the Prosperity administration.

The Prosperity Boys' next three games are against Rivers United away, Katsina United at home, and Shooting Stars away.
