2024/2025 NNL Match Day 8: Rovers FC fall short as Osun Utd hold firm for 2-1 win

Osun United delivered a solid performance to secure a 2-1 victory over a resilient Rovers FC in a thrilling duel on Matchday 9 of the 2024/2025 Nigeria National League.  


Seye Ajayi, who kept faith with most of his players from the previous match, handed a starting berth to wing sensation Faruq Oyeniyi. Lekan Gabriel and Ganiyu Gberefun were standout performers, with the latter playing a pivotal role in both goals scored by the Imole Gladiators in the first half.  


From the outset, Osun United asserted their dominance, controlling possession and dictating the pace of the game. Fifteen minutes after kickoff, United found the back of the net as Gberefun's brilliant creativity unlocked Rovers’ defense.  


He raced through and provided a perfectly weighted diagonal pass to Emmanuel Essien, who made no mistake in slotting the ball past Rovers' goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.  


A minute before the half-time whistle, Gberefun was at it again. This time, he controlled the ball and dazzled before releasing substitute Olateju Robiu, who delivered a well-timed diagonal pass. Olafimihan was on hand to double the lead with a clinical finish, sending the crowd into raptures as the hosts went 2-0 up.  


Although Rovers FC was outclassed in the first half, they came out with more intent after the break.  


Despite a few attacking efforts, they were unable to break down Osun United’s resolute defense.  


Seye Ajayi’s side was unlucky on a few occasions and could have put the game beyond reach for the visitors but kept fluffing their chances.  


As the game neared its conclusion, Rovers managed a late consolation goal in the dying minutes, but it was too little, too late to spark a full comeback.  


Osun United held firm to seal the 2-1 victory, with Lekan Gabriel's all-round brilliance making him the undisputed man of the match.  


The "Believe and Achieve" side now has 16 points, trailing group leader Kun Khalifa by three points. They continue their journey next weekend with a crucial away encounter against Sporting Lagos at Onikan, Lagos, for Matchday 10.
