Gateway United secured an impressive 2-0 victory over First Bank FC at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, on Matchday 6 of the 2024/25 Nigeria National League (NNL) campaign.
The Ogun State-based team dominated the first half to earn all three points at one of the league’s most challenging venues.
Head coach Festus Allen, who made four changes following their Matchday 5 loss to Solution FC, saw his team deliver a commanding response.
The visitors wasted no time, pressing aggressively from the kickoff and breaking the deadlock in the 3rd minute through Olufemi Famuyiwa. Just four minutes later, Taofeek Babatunde doubled Gateway’s lead with a stunning curling effort that left the home fans stunned.
First Bank FC sought to respond, with Christian Samuel finding space in the box in the 17th minute, but his weak shot was easily gathered by Gateway’s goalkeeper, Ibrahim Raheem.
Moments later, Adetola Adeyemi tested Raheem with a powerful effort, but the shot-stopper stood tall to deny the hosts.
Gateway United’s defense, marshaled by the outstanding Adeleye Olalekan, kept First Bank at bay throughout the match. Olalekan’s timely blocks and commanding presence earned him the Man of the Match award.
Late on, Hamsat Jamiu almost extended Gateway’s lead but fired wide after driving into the box.
The visitors’ resolute defending ensured a clean sheet and their second win of the season.
The result brings a much-needed boost for Gateway United, who will have a bye on Matchday 7 before returning to host Kun Khalifa FC in Ilaro on February 1, 2025.
The victory highlights Gateway United’s resilience and ability to respond under pressure as they aim to climb the NNL standings.
