2024/2025 NNL Match Day 5: Okechukwu hits brace as Abia Comets beat Ijele FC

Abia Comets Football Club of Umuahia has continued its impressive form in the ongoing 2024/2025 Nigeria National League (NNL) season with a second victory on the road.


The Umuahia-based side secured a crucial 2-1 win over Oriental rivals, Ijele FC, on Saturday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.


The encounter, which was the 2024/2025 Nigeria National League (NNL) Match Day 5 fixture in the Southern Conference A, saw the Umuahia-based club take the lead in the 14th minute.


Okechukwu Chukwu scored what could be tagged the best goal of the week, with a powerful strike from outside the box to put Comets 1-0 ahead, assisted by Ebuka Lazarus.


The visitors continued their dominance with most of the ball possession, as Lazarus came close to doubling the lead, but his strike was saved by the host goalkeeper.


In the second half, head coach Okechukwu Ejeh made an early substitution, bringing in Emeka Maduka in place of Olabode Oluwatosin in the Comets' attacking line.


However, it became a one-sided affair after Okechukwu struck home a delightful finish to double the lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute, after Cyril Shedrack pressed hard on Ijele's defense line.


In the 87th minute, the hosts pulled a goal back from the penalty spot, reducing the deficit to 2-1. However, the defense line, led by Bright Ogbonna and Churchill Nnanna, held firm as Abia Comets secured an impressive 2-1 win in Enugu.


With the victory, Abia Comets maintains the top spot in the Southern Conference A standings with 11 points after five games.


Comets will return to Umuahia to continue their preparations ahead of next weekend's Match Day 6 encounter against Lagos-based club, Inter Lagos, on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
