2024/2025 NNL Match Day 10: Osun United survives late drama to beat Sporting Lagos 2-1

Posted : 17 February 2025

Osun United secured a vital 2-1 victory over Sporting Lagos in an exciting encounter at the latter’s home ground, Onikan Stadium, Lagos.

The Matchday 10 duel saw first-half goals from Emmanuel Essien and the NNL's top scorer, Ganiyu Gberefun, who helped the visitors maintain their strong push for a spot in the promotion playoff zone.

United should have capitalized on their early chances, but indecision on the part of their strikers proved to be their greatest undoing.

After enduring a tense period, Essien opened the scoring in the 31st minute, capitalizing on a well-delivered ball from the dazzling winger Naheem Odugbemi to put Osun United ahead.

Ten minutes later, the NNL's highest goal scorer, the towering forward Ganiyu Gberefun, made it 2-0 with a clinical finish, stealing the ball from a defender. This goal took his tally to six for the season and gave Osun United a comfortable lead heading into halftime.

Despite Osun United’s dominant performance, Sporting Lagos fought hard in the second half, with the match taking a dramatic turn in the dying moments.

A controversial penalty awarded to the hosts allowed them to reduce the deficit, although it was not enough to mount a serious challenge for an equalizer.

In the final stages of the match, Osun United’s substitute, Olateju Robiu, had a golden opportunity to extend the lead further, but his shot from a diagonal position inside the final third was deflected to safety. Fellow substitute Samuel Adeniyi was left unmarked, and a better delivery could have sealed a more convincing win for Seye Ajayi’s side.

In the end, 'The Gladiators' held on for all three points, keeping their momentum going in the league, while Sporting Lagos were left to rue their missed opportunities.

"Believe and Achieve" will now shift focus to the Osun State Federation Cup semi-final clash against Nationwide League One campaigners, Ijesha Golden Warriors, on Wednesday, February 19, at 10 a.m. The match is slated for Ejigbo Township Stadium.
