Osun United clinched a 1-0 victory over Solution FC in a thrilling encounter that saw Ganiyu Gberefun score the only goal of the match.
The decisive moment came in the 6th minute when Gberefun confidently converted a penalty kick to give Seye Ajayi's tutored side the much-needed victory.
The penalty was awarded after a foul inside the box was spotted when Lekan Gabriel's goal-bound header was blocked by an opponent's defender's hand. Gberefun's calm finish left the goalkeeper with no chance.
Despite dominating possession, Osun United failed to add to their lead in the first half, with Ebenezer Odeyemi coming agonizingly close to doubling the advantage.
At the half-hour mark, Odeyemi met a cross with a powerful header, but his effort crashed off the woodwork, leaving the players and supporters in disbelief as the ball bounced harmlessly away.
The second half proved to be a quieter affair as both sides struggled to break the deadlock. Solution FC failed to capitalize on any opportunities, and Osun United couldn't find the back of the net again, with Odeyemi once again being denied from the edge of the opponent's box at the death.
Although the game remained goalless in the second half, Osun United's defense held firm to preserve their slender lead and claim all three points.
With this victory, Osun United finished the first half of the league season on a high, as Gberefun extended his goal tally to seven for the campaign.
His performance continues to stand out for the team, and the three points further solidify their position as group leaders and a formidable side in the league with 22 points and a superior goal difference over Kun Khalifat FC, who have a game in hand.
"Believe and Achieve" will kickstart the second round with a crucial away encounter against a wounded Solution FC.
