2024/2025 NNL Match Day 10: Igbajo United Coach, Eroje, rues missed chances against Edel FC

Posted : 03 March 2025

In a Matchday 10 encounter of the Nigeria National League at the Lanre Leke Sports Complex in Ile Ogbo, Osun State, Igbajo United FC settled for a frustrating 0-0 draw with Edel FC.

The Chief Coach of Igbajo United, Sule Isa Eroje, lamented the missed chances that cost his side what he described as "two points dropped."

The match began cautiously, with both teams struggling to find a breakthrough in the opening 15 minutes.

Igbajo United showed early attacking intent, as Mutiu Babalola’s glancing header from a corner in the 20th minute narrowly missed the target.

Despite early promise, the home side was forced to make an early substitution when Babalola suffered an injury in the 37th minute, prompting Idam Sunday to replace him.

The second half brought renewed energy for Igbajo United. In the 46th minute, Kingsley Godwin took a free kick from the edge of the box, but the breakthrough remained elusive.

A substitution in the 51st minute saw Rilwan Sadiq replace Moshood Elewure, injecting fresh energy into the team.

Despite creating several promising chances—including a double miss when Michael’s powerful shot from a Mathias cross was blocked, followed by Adegboye Safiu’s rebound that soared over the bar—Igbajo United struggled to find the net.

Late in the game, Idam Sunday and Matthew both came close to breaking the deadlock.

In the dying minutes, teenager Matthew Ogunrinola squandered a clear opportunity from the edge of the box, sealing the fate of the match.

After the game, Eroje was blunt in his assessment:

“Without a doubt, it was two points dropped. We created more than enough chances to win, especially in the second half.
I thought it was quite tight in the first half; they were big, physical, and came for a point. Respect to them—they defended really well. They protected their box effectively.”

He added:

“With the chances we created in the second half, we should have won. Given our current position, we need to stay in touch with the pack and push for survival.
We’ve now had two league games in a row without maximum points, so unfortunately, I have to say it’s two points dropped today.”

With the draw, Igbajo United FC now sit on 5 points as they close the first stanza of the season.

The club is eager to bolster their squad ahead of the second half of the campaign, understanding that every point is crucial in their bid for league survival.

Though the match lacked goals, it was a test of character and resilience for Igbajo United, who now face the challenge of translating their potential into points in the coming fixtures.
