The management of Kogi United Football Club, on Monday, 10th March 2025, unveiled former Jigawa Golden Stars player/coach Gilbert Opana as the club's new Technical Adviser.
In a brief ceremony at the club's office at the Kogi State Government House, Lokoja, the Chairman of the club, Honourable Abdulmalik Isah, tasked the new coach with bringing his wealth of experience and discipline to ensure the speedy success of the Confluence State club.
He also advised the coach to exhibit resilience, determination, hard work, and passion for the job, which will help ensure a quick return of the club to its glory days.
The chairman of the state-owned team, Abdulmalik Isah (Dolly), stated that Coach Gilbert Opana was appointed based on his experience and track record with different clubs in the Nigerian football ecosystem. As such, he believes Opana’s experience and impressive CV will help ensure Kogi United FC gets promoted to the second tier of the Nigerian league.
He also praised the Kogi State government, led by Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for his unwavering financial and moral support to the state teams, stating that they would not take his kind support for granted.
The new Technical Adviser thanked the management for deeming him worthy and qualified for such an enviable appointment and promised to do everything possible to ensure that the mandate given to him—to return the club to the Nigerian National League—is achieved by the end of the forthcoming Nationwide League One season.
Coach Gilbert Opana, a former coach of Jigawa Golden Stars, has been tasked with ensuring that Kogi United FC returns to the nation’s second-tier league, the Nigeria National League. He will be assisted by coaches Mohammed Yusuf, Abdulazeez Adeiza, and Taiye Ojo.
Kogi United FC, who narrowly missed out on promotion last season, will begin their quest for a return to the Nigeria National League in April 2025.
