2024/2025 CAF Confederation Cup: Enyimba International FC secures massive win

Posted : 06 January 2025

New signing Brown Ideye was on target as Enyimba secured their first win in the CAF Confederation Cup, cruising past Black Bulls Maputo with a 4-1 victory at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

"The People's Elephants" had previously lost 3-0 to the Mozambican club in the corresponding fixture and were on a 10-game winless streak in all competitions.

Enyimba, however, made a fast start to the game as Joseph Atule broke the deadlock in the sixth minute, recording the home side’s first goal in five games. Shortly after, Ejaita Ifoni equalized for the visitors following a poor defensive clearance.

Enyimba restored their lead on the cusp of halftime, thanks to Ifeanyi Ihemekwele’s second goal of the tournament, giving the home side a crucial advantage heading into the second half.

In the 67th minute, Brown Ideye, who had just come on, received a pass from Joseph Atule, skipped past the goalkeeper, and slotted the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle, extending Enyimba's lead.

Joseph Atule then sealed the victory with a right-footed shot into the center of the goal after a swift counterattack, capping off Enyimba’s biggest win in all competitions since their 3-0 triumph over Kaduna United nearly three months ago.

The result will be highly satisfying for Stanley Eguma, recently appointed to replace Yemi Olanrewaju following a series of poor results in the NPFL and the Confederation Cup.

Despite the emphatic win, Enyimba remain bottom of Group D with four points from four matches. However, they are just one point behind Al Masry, who sit second, and four points adrift of leaders Zamalek SC.

Next, Enyimba will host Al Masry at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Sunday, January 12, in a crucial encounter that could have significant implications for the final standings of Group D.
