Nigeria's representative in the 2024/2025 CAF Confederation Cup, Enyimba International FC, has qualified for the group stage of the competition.
The People's Elephant ground out a hard-fought victory over Etoile Filante at the Goodswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo via a penalty shootout.
It was a tension-filled encounter in Uyo as Enyimba FC defeated Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso 3-2 on penalties, with both teams playing a goalless draw in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round on Sunday.
Enyimba held their Burkina Faso opponents to a 0-0 draw in the first leg, played in Abidjan last week, and Etoile Filante returned the favor in Uyo, as both sides finished 0-0 over the two legs, forcing a penalty shootout.
Enyimba converted three out of their first five penalty shots, while Etoile Filante could only convert two, losing 3-2 on aggregate. This sent the home team's fans into wild jubilation.
Enyimba remains the only Nigerian team left in continental competitions, as El-Kanemi Warriors, Remo Stars, and Enugu Rangers, Nigeria’s other representatives, have all exited their various CAF Inter-Club competitions.
Enyimba will now proceed to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage and fly the Nigerian flag as the sole team looking for honors on the continent, while also improving the country’s coefficient ranking to retain the four-team slot for the country in CAF Inter-Club competitions.
