One of Nigeria's representatives in the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League, Remo Stars International FC, secured a narrow 2-1 victory over the visiting AS FAR of Morocco on Sunday.
The match, played at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, saw the Sky Blue Stars achieve a much-needed revenge in the CAF inter-club encounter, delighting their fans.
All the goals in the match came from headers, and for the first time in their continental campaign, Remo Stars scored a goal in the first half.
After a commanding performance at the start of the game, Remo Stars took the lead with a perfect header from their captain, Nduka Junior, who connected with a free-kick delivered by the ‘master-of-assist’ Sodiq Ismail in the 19th minute.
This was the first time Remo Stars scored a first-half goal in their five continental matches.
The team continued to dominate with crisp and penetrating passes, but unfortunately, many of the chances created were missed.
They paid for these missed opportunities in the second half. In the 50th minute, AS FAR equalized when Joel Beya was given a free-header opportunity off a cross, leveling the score at 1-1.
The tempo of the game changed, and the Moroccans resorted to time-wasting tactics. Just as it seemed they might escape with a 1-1 draw, Sodiq Ismail, a natural wingback, scored a remarkable diving header for the second goal.
The master of assists turned into a goal scorer, finishing the game with both an assist and a goal.
The return leg will take place on Sunday in Rabat as Remo Stars aim to advance past the first round for the first time.
