Nigeria's league defending champions, Rangers International FC, have been knocked out of the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League after a 1-3 defeat at the hands of Esperança Sagrada of Angola.
The ouster of the second Nigerian team in the competition came after Remo Stars were earlier knocked out of the same competition in the first round of the preliminary stages.
The Fidelis Ilechukwu-tutored side was eliminated courtesy of a 2-3 aggregate score, despite winning the first leg 1-0 in Uyo.
Rangers now join Remo Stars, who exited the competition in the first round of the preliminary stage, losing to AS FAR of Morocco on a 3-2 aggregate, leaving Nigeria without representation in the money-spinning group stage of the CAF Champions League for another season.
No Nigerian team has qualified for the CAF Champions League group stage in the last four seasons, and the chase continues.
It’s been 20 years since a Nigerian side won the CAF Champions League trophy. Enyimba won the 2003 and 2004 editions, remaining the last Nigerian team to win the competition and the only Nigerian club in history to have claimed the title.
