2023 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria in a win or burst against host Australia as Canada earns a 2-1 win over Ireland

History repeated itself at the Perth Rectangular Stadium as Canada repeated a 2015 performance that beat Ireland coming from behind at 2-1 in group B sending Ireland to the exit door.
In 2015 Canada came from a goal down to obtain victory over Ireland Canada and Ireland met at the World International Tournament Cyprus Women Playoffs on 12th March 2014, and Canada won 2-1.
Captain Katie McCabe (27 years old) of Arsenal of England had written her name in history books of Ireland being the first to score a goal in a major tournament in the 4th minute of play as her corner kick curled beautifully straight into the net.
Brighton of Britain Defender, Megan Connolly, sporting the number 6 shirt, failed to clear her lines well, sending the ball into own goal in the 45+5th minute.
Andriana Leon collected a telepathic pass from team mate Shmidt to score the winner in the 53rd minute of play.
Ireland has therefore a formality match against Nigeria in their last group match as the country is obviously out of the tournament. Canada may need a point more if there is a winner between Nigeria and Australia on Thursday.
Canada currently leads Group B with 4 points scoring 2 goals and conceding one; Australia is 2nd with 3 points having a lone goal to her credit; Nigeria is 3rd with a point and is yet to score or concede a goal while Ireland has zero point.
Canada played goalless with Nigeria in this group and Australia piped Ireland 1-0.
Canada has not conceded a first half goal in the last 8 group matches at FIFA women’s world cup except against Ireland. They had fallen for conceding in 2011 against France in second group game.
Canada had lost 12 of their last FIFA women’s world cup matches against European sides except the 1-1 draw against Netherlands and defeating Switzerland 1-0 in 2015.
On Thursday 27th July, USA will face a formidable side in Netherlands at Wellington Regional Stadium in group E at 0200 hours.
Portugal in the same group will try the Vietnam War at 0830 hours at FMG Stadium, Waikato. Nigeria will battle for her first win against hosts Australia at the Suncorp Stadium in a group B match at 1100 hours.
