2023 Women's Under-19 EURO finals: Spain vs Germany preview
Posted : 29 July 2023
Spain and Germany will face off in the final of the 2023 UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship on Sunday, July 30th. The match will take place at Den Dreef Stadium in Leuven.
Germany, who finished as runners-up in Group A, will be aiming to clinch their seventh championship title. On the other hand, Group B runners-up Spain will be determined to defend their title and secure a fifth championship win.
Both teams earned their place in the final through dramatic semi-final victories. Germany made a sensational comeback in extra time against France, displaying great courage and determination. Meanwhile, Spain's goalkeeper, Txell Font, showcased her penalty-saving heroics to secure their passage to the final after a late scare against the Netherlands.
This will be the fourth time the two sides meet in the final. Germany claimed their first title in 2000 with a 4-2 victory over Spain. However, Spain got their revenge in the subsequent finals, defeating Germany 2-1 in 2004 and 1-0 in 2018.
Germany holds a slightly better record in the final, winning six out of ten appearances, while Spain has secured four titles in nine attempts.
Notably, Spain has reached every women's youth final since the post-COVID resumption. They will be eager to avenge their penalty shootout defeat against Germany in the 2022 U17 Women's EURO final.
As the holders of the title, Spain will be motivated to retain the trophy, but Germany, buoyed by their recent comeback and new-found momentum, will be determined to seize the championship.
