2023 UEFA European Under-19 Championship Review: Italy and Portugal reach semi-finals
Posted : 10 July 2023
Italy secured a draw against Poland, finishing as runners-up in Group A and advancing to the semi-finals of the 2023 UEFA European Under-19 Championship alongside Portugal.
Poland took an early lead with Igor Strzałek's long-range strike, but Italy responded with Luis Hasa converting from Samuele Vignato's impressive run to earn the necessary point. Meanwhile, Portugal concluded their Group A campaign with a 2-1 victory over the eliminated hosts Malta.
The semi-final line-up will be determined after the completion of Monday's Group B matches. Spain has already secured a spot in the last four, but they will secure first place if they defeat Norway. However, Norway will qualify for the semi-finals with a draw and could finish at the top of the group with a victory, or if Iceland fails to defeat Greece.
On Matchday 2, Norway and Iceland had a close encounter, with Eggert Aron Gudmundsson's remarkable 87th-minute equalizer denying Norway a place in the semi-finals and keeping both teams in contention.
Iceland now faces Greece in a must-win scenario, although Greece is no longer able to advance from the group. Iceland's hopes of setting up a semi-final clash with Portugal also rely on Norway losing to Spain.
The final group stage matches will determine the remaining semi-finalists and set the stage for the exciting knockout phase of the 2023 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.
