2023 NWFL: Sunshine Queens plots Bayelsa Utd FC's fall in Akure

Posted : 14 November 2023
Sunshine Queens players have vowed to avenge the 2021/22 loss against Bayelsa Queens when they visit Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure for the first match of the abridged 2023/24 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) on Wednesday.

The remaining four players out of the squad that played against Bayelsa Queens two years ago stated this at the team’s training ground in Akure, the state capital.

Sunshine Queens winger, Taiwo Ajibade, said with the determination and motivation in the team’s camp, she is optimistic about a good outing against the former NWFL Champions.

She added that the philosophy of the current squad is different now, saying the style of play and preparation for the new season is top-notch. "Kudos to our coaches.

"We are in high spirits not just for the tie against Bayelsa Queens alone, but for the season,'' she said.

Left back of the team, Aluba Ogba, disclosed that the target of the team is the maximum points against the visiting team, saying they defeated her side 3-0 two seasons ago, now we are ready to pay them back in the same coin.

Aluba left Sunshine Queens in the 2022/23 season to team up with Edo Queens, but she has now rejoined the club for the 2023/24 season.

“Honestly, this is not the team I left last season, everything about the team has changed, both the on and off-field training is classic”.

“We are going to revenge the 3-0 loss, we are ready for them, with the bunch of young talents and experienced players I’m seeing here, I’m confident that we are going to do well this season.”

On her own, prolific attacker, Shola Oduwale, said they are not under pressure against their opponent, promising that if given the opportunity to feature in the game, that she will help the team to overcome the visitors.

She said: “There are lots of improvements in the current squad compared to the previous one, with God on our side, we will defeat them, I have full confidence in the team”.

The right back of the team, Divine Onwuchekwa (Warrior), said all the team needed now is to maintain the current form and be determined like never before, saying they are ready to get the job done.

She commended the team’s coaching crew for changing their orientation about the round leather game, adding that they are more equipped in the game compared to years ago.

“Our Abuja pre-season tour was a testimony of good things to come for the team, before, we used to find it very hard to score, but now we have really improved in that aspect, we are more determined and ready to play.

“Winning, winning is my target for my team and we want to make our home ground a fortress”, she said."
