2023 NNL: Heartland FC ends regular season unbeaten

Heartland FC of Owerri has concluded the Nigeria National League (NNL) regular season without a defeat.

The Naze millionaires had qualified for the NNL playoffs with a game to spare, having garnered an unassailable lead of 21 points from 9 matches.

Visiting Abia Comets frustrated Heartland at the Dan Anyiam Stadium with their time-wasting antics.

Onyekachi Okafor, Heartland’s top scorer, had a bad day in the office as he failed to apply the finish on several occasions.

The game ended in a scoreless stalemate as both sides failed to break the deadlock.

Reacting, the Technical Adviser admitted that the team could have done better, but assured that Heartland will qualify for the elite league.

"It was a tough game, we wanted to win for our fans before we leave for the playoffs, but that’s football. 

"We are still unbeaten going into the playoffs.

"I am confident that God will see us through, we will qualify and return our darling Club where it rightfully belongs," he said.

The General Manager, Mr Promise Nwachukwu, re-echoed the sentiment of the coach.

"Our unbeaten run is still intact going into the playoffs. The team is determined to reciprocate the good gestures of our Governor and the Honourable Commissioner for Sport by returning the team to the NPFL."

The Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Emeka Okoronkwo, commended Heartland FC on their qualification to the NNL Super 8 tournament, urging them to take it a notch higher by returning to the elite League.

The commissioner commended the team, coaches and management for fighting a good fight.

He urged them not to rest on their laurels untill victory is achieved.

"I want to commend the team, the fans, coaches, and of course his Excellency, who made it possible by providing all that was needed to do the job, please do not rest, there is work to be done.

"All hands must be on deck till we achieve our goal."

Heartland FC is the only club in the NNL that went unbeaten in the second tier.
