Posted : 15 July 2023
On Sunday, Mexico and Panama will face off in the 2023 Gold Cup Final at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California, with the chance to be crowned Concacaf Gold Cup champions.
This will be the first time these two nations meet in a Gold Cup Final, but it will be their sixth encounter in Gold Cup play, with both sides holding a 2W-1D-2L record, making this Final a tiebreaker.
Panama, appearing in their third Gold Cup Final and the first since 2013, will be eager to secure their first-ever Gold Cup title. They defeated the United States 5-4 in a penalty shootout in the semifinals after a 1-1 draw, boosted by the impressive performances of Adalberto Carrasquilla and Ismael Diaz.
On the other hand, Mexico, aiming for a record ninth Gold Cup title, enter the Final with confidence after a convincing 3-0 victory against Jamaica in the semifinals. The team has seen contributions from various players, with four individuals scoring two goals each in the tournament, including Henry Martin, Luis Chavez, Orbelin Pineda, and Luis Romo.
Notably, Mexico's legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is on the verge of making history. He is set to break the record for the most Gold Cup appearances by a Mexico player, reaching 25 games, one ahead of his former teammate Andres Guardado.
With a win, Ochoa would also become the first player to achieve five Gold Cup titles, surpassing DaMarcus Beasley and Landon Donovan of the United States. Both teams are determined to etch their names in Gold Cup history in what promises to be an exciting and highly anticipated final match.
