2023 Federations Cup: Warri Wolves zooms into Q-Finals
Posted : 25 May 2023
An 89th-minute lone goal from Sodiq Okunlola was all Warri Wolves FC needed to seal a 1-0 victory over Gombe United in the round of 16 of the 2022/2023 Federations cup.
A Coach-Jolomi-Atune-led technical bench had brought in Sodiq Okunlola as a substitute in the 40th minute of play and he proved to know the missing links to add up, to put his side ahead of their Nigerian Premier Football league NPFL senior opponent, Gombe United.
Sodiq in a post match comment said he was able to read the game off the field when noticed that one of the defenders from the opponent, had always gambled with passes.
"While I was outside I noticed the defender was very comfortable crossing the ball.
"He gambles a lot, so when the pass was crossed, I just had to chase him down cos I knew he was going to gamble"
"So I just used the opportunity. I also saw the keeper that he was out of his line so I calmly chipped the ball over him knowing it was the last opportunity we had"
" I am very excited, it was my first goal in Warri Wolves, am happy it happened for me and my team mates,'' he said.
Both teams had fought hard to outdo each other all through the pulsating encounter that looked like it was to stretch in to a penalty shoot, as the NPFL side made Wolves Keeper Joke Elvis pull several great saves to keep his side safe .
The victory means Warri Wolves have moved on to the Quarter finals stage (R of 8) where they will on Saturday May 27 take on their next opponent.
