2023 Fed Cup Quarter Final: Fans tip Edo Queens for a win against Lakeside Queens in Owerri

Posted : 17 May 2023
As the 2023 Federation Cup enters its crucial stage, football-loving fans in Edo State have charged Moses Aduku-led Queens to replicate the form they displayed against Maureen Madu FC when they face Lakeside Queens FC of Ogun State. The Edo Queens will play on Thursday, May 18, in the quarterfinal schedule to be held at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Imo State. Chairman of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Edo State Chapter, Ojefua Osadolor, and other ardent football supporters in Edo have thrown their weight behind Edo Queens players to beat Lakeside Queens and win the 2023 Federation Cup for the state. The duo charged the players to keep the winning spirit on, adding that the Edo Queens have all it takes to make the state proud in this competition and other subsequent ones. "I want to use this opportunity to thank the state government for their support of the three state-owned teams, Bendel Insurance, Edo Queens, and Bendel Insurance Feeders. "I'm also happy with the performance of these three teams." C Currently, Bendel Insurance is in top form, Edo Queens is doing marvellously well, and Bendel Insurance Feeders are also at their best. "This wouldn't have been possible if the state government wasn't backing them." So, for Edo Queens, I want to urge them to go all out and beat their opponent on Thursday in the Federation Cup quarterfinal. "Edo State football-loving fans are waiting anxiously to see Edo Queens lift this year's Federation trophy," he said. Another die-hard fan, Napoleon Ayobo, commended the coach, Moses Aduku, and the ladies for finishing top in Group B of the NWFL 2022–23 abridged league season. He described the Edo Queens team as potential champions of the league.

According to him, "As a strong supporter of this team, I'm very happy with their progress."

"I believe in the ability of these girls; they have played very well in their previous matches, so I think they can secure a massive away win against the championship side from Ogun State."

"For so many years, the Edo State premiership team has not won a major trophy for the state; this is why everybody is throwing their weight behind Edo Queens FC to break that jinx."

"Edo Queens is in the middle of a title fight, so with the backing of the government, they must fight like wounded lionesses to get a trophy for us."

To reach the quarterfinal stage, the red-hot ladies from the Heartbeat State defeated Sunshine Queens FC of Akure 1-0 at the Awka Township Stadium in Anambra State for the round of 32.

The team then progressed to the round of 16, where they humiliated Maureen Madu FC of Anambra State 5-0, which gave them a ticket to the quarterfinals.

Having done excellently well, the general belief of most football pundits across Edo State and beyond is that the Edo Queens are not under any pressure as they are confident of victory on Thursday against the Ogun State-based ladies.

For record purposes, Lakeside Queens FC is not new to Edo Queens. At the 2021 Sheros Cup pre-season tournament held in Abuja, they suffered a 3-0 loss to Edo Queens. This Thursday's encounter will be the first time both teams will be facing each other in a Federation Cup competition.

However, Owerri football fans are looking forward to seeing a good display of football artistry from both sides. In Thursday's quarterfinal games, eight teams will be on parade. Edo Queens will battle Lakeside Queens in Owerri, defending champions.

Bayelsa Queens will be up against Fortress Ladies of Benin at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar, FC. Robo will square up against the Nasarawa Amazons in Awka Township Stadium in Anambra State, while the Rivers Angels will lock horns with the Delta Queens of Asaba in Aba Township Stadium.
