2023 AFL: Enyimba falters on continent again, beaten at home
Posted : 23 October 2023
Nigeria's most successful club and representative in the inaugural African Football League (AFL), Enyimba International FC, once again faltered on the continent as they were defeated 0-1 by Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco.
The Peoples Elephant had previously been eliminated from the CAF Champions League in the preliminary stage by Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco.
The Aba Warlords, tutored by Finidi George, lost with a 4-3 aggregate in the first leg against Al-Ahli. The Aba-based team needed two goals to progress to the next round, but they were unable to find the back of the net before the full-time whistle.
This loss marks the first time the Nigerian champions have been eliminated in the preliminary round of the tournament. Enyimba has won the CAF Champions League twice, in 2003 and 2004, making them the only Nigerian football club to achieve this feat.
However, the fortunes of Enyimba International FC have dwindled over the years. Now, the nine-time league winners face elimination from the inaugural African Football League after losing 1-0 at home to Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco in the first leg of the quarter-final clash on Sunday.
Finidi watched as his charges struggled to find a way past Wydad AC's composed defense, resulting in an important 1-0 away victory for Wydad in the first leg at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Wydad's captain, Yayha Jabrane, scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 38th minute of the encounter.
Enyimba fought hard to get back into the game but couldn't break down the opposition's defense. The Nigerian champions were reduced to 10 men when Alalibo Somiari was sent off late in the game.
The second leg of the quarter-final will take place next week Wednesday in Casablanca, Morocco, and the winner over the two legs will advance to the semifinal.
