Sunshine Queens went down to two first-half goals against Bayelsa Queens on Match Day 9 of the Nigeria Women's Football League (NWFL) played at Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa.
Bolaji Olamide could have given the visitors the lead in the 26th minute, but her shot was inches off the target.
Earlier, the lucky striker's 30-yard missile was blocked by a Bayelsa Queens defender.
Moments later, the hosts benefited from a defensive error that led to an own goal in the 33rd minute, before Bayelsa Queens doubled the lead three minutes later.
The visitors' efforts to reduce the lead in the first half were unsuccessful as the home side kept it tight to ensure the first stanza ended in their advantage.
The restart of the entertaining encounter failed to record any further goals, with Sunshine Queens introducing Taiwo Ajibade, Taiwo Aganmuyi, and Precious Edewor to replace Suliyat Ajibade, Ezeani Eunice, and Shola Oduwale, respectively.
Sunshine Queens FC head coach, Oladimeji Abimbola, said his side lost the game due to a lack of concentration, which led to the two goals.
He charged his players to shrug off the defeat, saying they would go home to work on areas where they are lacking.
“We will go back to the drawing board to address some loopholes discovered in the course of this encounter against Bayelsa Queens.”
“We will get back to work immediately we get to our base in preparation for our home game against FC Robo next week Wednesday,” he said.
