Nasarawa Amazons Football Club of Lafia earned a hard-fought 1-0 away win over Abia Angels, claiming the top spot in Group A of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).
Coach Christopher Danjuma's side secured the vital three away points against their hosts in Aba, who are languishing in 6th position in the NWFL24 after the matchday 12 encounter.
The rescheduled match was played on Thursday due to the Enyimba international game against Kano Pillars on Wednesday.
The first half started brightly as Nasarawa Amazons took total control of the midfield, dominating the pitch as if they were playing at home.
The only goal of the game came in the 26th minute when Kalu Chinyere took a stunning shot from 32 yards to beat former Nasarawa Amazons goalkeeper, Mercy Vincent, who was in goal for Abia Angels. The encounter ended 1-0 after the first half.
The second 45 minutes began with the home team, Abia Angels, playing like a wounded lion to equalize, but the sturdy defense of Nasarawa Amazons proved strong enough to protect the goal, with Bakare making some brilliant saves to secure the win.
Nasarawa Amazons currently top Group A standings with 23 points after 12 matches.
Next, Nasarawa Amazons will welcome Adamawa Queens on matchday 13 at the Lafia City Stadium after the Sallah break.
