2023/2024 NPFL Rescheduled Match Day 27: Rivers United Remains Winless in Four Matches, Earns a Point from 15 Possible

Posted : 16 May 2024

Nigeria's last representative in the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup, Rivers United, has continued their winless streak in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) rescheduled matches, extending the winless run to four matches with the latest result from the rescheduled Match Day 27, where they were roundly beaten 0-2 by Abia Warriors.

The result means that the Pride of Rivers have only earned one point out of a possible 15 in the rescheduled matches. The former Stanley Eguma-tutored team had started with a 1-2 loss against Remo Stars, then played to a 0-0 stalemate against Kwara United in Ilorin, and suffered a lone goal defeat at the hands of struggling Sunshine Stars of Akure, with the latest defeat coming in Umuahia.

In the ill-fated match, striker Obi Samson scored his seventh league goal of the season as Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia moved back to the top half of the Nigeria Premier Football League table following the 2-0 victory over Rivers United of Port Harcourt in the rescheduled game decided at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Coach Bethel Oji had unleashed the trio of Samson Obi, Sunday Megwo, and Paschal Nwabueze in attack, and the plot paid off as it was Obi who netted the opener in the 65th minute before substitute Chinemerem (Meme) Okike calmed all the frayed nerves with the consolidator with virtually the last kick of the exciting game.

The first half produced no goals as the visitors, Rivers United FC, ensured the game was a cagey affair. However, the second half saw the Warriors firing on all cylinders with the attacking trio giving Rivers United's defensive line serious work at the back.

With pressure mounting by the minute, it was only a matter of time before the inevitable could happen. And so it did in the 65th minute when Paschal Nwabueze dribbled past Rivers United players and released the ball to Sunday Megwo, who gave a through pass to Obi to round the keeper and score the opener.
