Bashir Usman's individual brilliance earned Niger Tornadoes a deserved 1-0 home win, putting an end to a winless streak after five matches.
Niger Tornadoes' dazzling winger, Bashir, smashed home a rocket shot to break the deadlock in the second half after an astonishing ball control that silenced his markers, releasing a shot that blinded Badmos Nurudeen in goal for Akwa United.
The two teams, battling to leave the red zone, put their best foot forward from the blast of the whistle in search of a win to move up on the NPFL log.
Few chances were created in the first half as both sides stuck to tactical discipline, and the half ended scoreless.
Tornadoes made changes as the second half commenced, introducing the likes of Yahuza Bala, Bolaji Adeyemo, and Clinton Jephta, adding more spice to the Ikon Allah Boys' attack as they seized control of the game.
Midway through the half, pressure paid off for the hosts as Bashir Usman struck after benefiting from skipper Ifeanyi Okoye's well-laid pass, sending the entire stadium into raptures. It turned out to be the only goal of the match, his third for the season and second at home.
The win moved Tornadoes two places from 19th place on the log to 17th going into the next game.
Coach Hamza Abdul'azeez Abara, on the sidelines of the win, spoke highly of the team.
"We had many sleepless nights before today's game, trying to perfect our conversion rate, which has been our greatest challenge this season.
"The game was tricky because of the position of the two teams, but we needed the win more, judging by our two previous home results.
"We spoke with the boys about the need to put the previous results behind and start another clean slate starting from this game. Indeed, the win is a morale booster for us going forward.
"Our next game is against Doma United, who are in top form. You can see their position on the log—a very difficult team to beat but not impossible."
