2023/2024 NPFL Match Day 6: Akwa Utd earn first win over Gombe Utd FC

Kufre Ebong's 35th-minute goal made the difference on Wednesday as Akwa United FC secured their first win of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season after six matches.

The management of Akwa United FC had issued a two-match ultimatum to the technical crew, led by Fatai Osho, and the players to return to winning form. The team took a positive step by securing a valuable away point in their previous match against Bendel Insurance during Match Day 5.

Facing the challenge of Gombe United, Akwa United executed the task well, winning with a lone goal in a match held at Eket Township Stadium. Kufre Ebong scored with a low cross inside the six-yard box, assisted by Anthony Anioke.

While the Promise Keepers had several chances to extend their lead, the Savannah Tigers' resolute defense contained their offensive threats. In the 40th minute, Akwa United's David Philip came close to scoring with a beautiful attempt, narrowly missing the target.

Furthermore, Akwa United FC had an opportunity to double their lead during the six minutes of added extra time. Sunday Williams found Osoba on the left side, and the winger took a shot, but goalkeeper Itodo made a crucial save, maintaining the score at 1-0.
