Enyimba International FC, dethroned champions, secured the final continental slot in the concluded 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with a 2-0 victory over Plateau United FC.

With the People's Elephant clinching the last slot, they will now compete in the second tier of African continental football, the CAF Confederation Cup.

In their match against Plateau United FC, NPFL top scorer Chijioke Mbaoma and Academy Balogun secured the crucial win for Enyimba with two late goals, earning them the CAF Confederation Cup ticket.

The defending champions struggled in the first half despite their dominance, with Plateau United FC looking poised to secure a draw.

Having known beforehand that they had everything to gain or lose, Enyimba intensified their efforts in the second half but initially faltered with timid finishing in the final third, resulting in numerous missed opportunities.

However, in the second period, Enyimba increased their urgency, forcing Plateau United to defend in numbers and capitalizing on counter-attacks.

With 13 minutes remaining, Chijioke Mbaoma showcased why he was Nigeria's top scorer of the season, breaking from the left and scoring with a left-footed strike into the far corner for the opening goal, much to the delight of the stadium.

Ten minutes later, Academy Balogun doubled the People's Elephant's lead by beating Plateau United's offside trap and firing into the bottom corner.

The 2-0 victory saw Enyimba finish third in the final standings with 63 points, one point behind Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), securing their fifth CAF Confederation Cup berth after previous appearances in 2010, 2018, 2020, and 2023 campaigns.
