Sporting Lagos FC earned their first win in four games on Sunday, defeating visiting title-chasing Enyimba International FC 2-1 in Lagos for the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 37, but they still remain in the danger zone of relegation.
It was a tough battle for the Tech Boys, who knew they needed nothing less than a win against a side determined to secure back-to-back Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) titles.
Understanding the match's significance, the Noisy Lagosians left nothing to chance, starting the game against the Peoples Elephant like hungry lions.
The Tech Boys had their first chance on goal in the 37th minute when Chinedu Ufere almost caught out the Enyimba goalkeeper with a powerful effort from outside the box, but it was parried wide.
Sporting Lagos FC found a breakthrough for their high-pressure game in the 45th minute, as Godwin Odibo fired home the opening goal of the encounter.
However, after a careless display in the second half, the defending champions, the Peoples Elephant, equalized from the penalty spot in the 74th minute after a rough tackle by a Sporting Lagos FC player.
As the game neared its end, in-form Sporting Lagos FC striker Jonathan Alukwu restored his side's lead when it mattered most, calmly finishing in the dying moments of the match in the 85th minute to secure a 2-1 victory.
However, it was a bittersweet feeling for the Lagos boys, who could not celebrate fully as they still sit rooted in 17th position on the NPFL table.
With Bayelsa United FC stunning Shooting Stars SC in Yenagoa, the league table remains unchanged.
Speaking to Africa Sports Network (ASN), the Media Officer of Sporting Lagos expressed disappointment at the unfortunate turn of events as the team prepares to face Shooting Stars SC in Ibadan for a crucial survival battle.
As it stands, Sporting Lagos FC remains in 17th position and faces potential relegation unless they secure a victory in Ibadan.
