The push by Shooting Stars SC of Ibadan for a continental slot nearly collapsed in Yenagoa after surrendering a one-goal lead against relegation-threatened Bayelsa United FC, resulting in a 1-2 loss in a tense encounter.
The 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 37, held at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, saw the Oluyole Warriors open the scoring in the 26th minute through Christian Pyagbara.
However, the match took a turn for the worse in the 27th minute when Shooting Stars SC player Aniyikaye Adeleye received a red card for a second yellow following a dangerous tackle on Bayelsa United FC's Wisdom Magbisa.
The Prosperity Boys rallied in the second half and swiftly scored two goals in the 76th and 81st minutes. John Bassey initiated the comeback with a superb finish after Abdulrahman Muniru set him up for a close-range tap-in.
The dependable Bassey then completed his brace in the 81st minute.
With the game ending 2-1 in favor of Bayelsa United FC, they climbed to 15th position on the NPFL table with 47 points, while Shooting Stars SC maintained their position with 59 points.
