Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos will be ablaze on Sunday as Remo Stars once again storm Lagos for a match against Sporting Lagos FC on Match Day 24 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
For Remo Stars, they are no strangers to the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, as that was where they secured second place in the 2023 league's Super 6.
The Sky Blue Stars FC have enjoyed a good run in the last Southwestern derbies since joining the NPFL three seasons ago. Their unbeaten streak stands at 14 matches across four rivals. Now, they face a test at Onikan against Sporting Lagos, aiming to make it 15 straight.
Sporting Lagos won’t be a pushover. They’ve surged in the second half of the season, grabbing 10 out of 15 points. The "noisy Lagosians" are currently fighting for survival in this season. Sporting Lagos FC has accumulated 28 points after 23 matches, winning seven games and suffering nine defeats in the Premier League.
At the moment, they are only three points clear of the relegation zone, but Lagosians have a match in hand. Last Monday, Paul Offor's team played a goalless draw away against Doma United. Overall, Sporting has secured three victories, suffered just one defeat, and recorded one draw in the last five rounds.
This will be the fourth clash between the teams, with the record currently even: two wins apiece and one draw.
Adding to the drama, red-hot Remo midfielder Tochukwu Michael and Sporting Lagos’ striker Junior Lokosa will have something to prove to their former clubs in Sunday’s high-stakes showdown.
