Defending champions Enyimba International have seized the top spot in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) standings after a resounding victory today in Aba.
The People’s Elephants, as Enyimba is known, hammered visiting Gombe United 4-0 today, thanks to Chijioke Mbaoma’s brace.
The result catapulted the Aba Warlords to the top of the top-flight table with 39 points after 22 games.
Mbaoma opened the scoring in the 47th minute from the penalty spot, completing his brace on 57 mins when he tapped into an empty net after the ball spilled into his path when Nnachi was felled while rounding the keeper.
The effort took Mbaoma’s tally for the season to 11, joint second in the chart.
AFCON 2023 silver medal-winning coach Finidi George’s three-man substitution in the second half yielded instant results as one of the new entrants, Uche Collins, helped himself with the club’s third goal on 69 minutes.
Imo Obot rounded off the scoring rout with the 4th goal via a free kick in added time.
Up next for Enyimba is an away game this Sunday against Akwa United, while Gombe United, who dropped into 18th place in the table, will welcome 3SC at the Pantami Stadium.
