2023/2024 NPFL Match Day 14: We have lots of work to do, says Heartland FC Coach, Boboye

Posted : 18 December 2023

Heartland FC Technical Adviser, Kennedy Boboye, has praised his players' resilience in the vital 1-0 home win over Akwa United on Sunday at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri. However, he stressed that they cannot relent yet as they are still not comfortable in the league table.

Chidiebere Ajoku's first-half stoppage-time goal handed the Naze Millionaires precious three points that have lifted the club to the 18th spot with 13 points from 14 games.

Boboye, in his assessment of his team's performances, said that he and his players were not content with their present position on the league table. Getting the results that will keep them away from the drop zone as soon as possible is their priority ahead of subsequent games.

"We have gotten the vital win. This is done and dusted, and we are looking forward to the next game with Doma United in Gombe.

"We feel good. It is due to the hard work of everyone in the team. We will keep on pushing because we need to get out of the position we are in."

Boboye, who came up against Akwa United, the same club he won the league title with in 2021, disagreed with the incumbent coach of the Promise Keepers, Fatai Osho, who cast aspersions on the playing turf of the Dan Anyiam Stadium.

The Heartland FC manager said there was nothing wrong with the stadium's pitch, adding that his boys didn't play up to expectations because of the game plan they adopted to neutralize Akwa United's formation.

"No, I don't support what we said. This is our home ground. It is like telling Akwa United to leave their comfort zone in Eket to another stadium.

"We played better in the last game than the way we played against Akwa United. It was due to the formation we adopted. They came with a different formation and we had to quickly make adjustments."

The coach also corrected the impression that Heartland FC possesses low-quality strikers, stating that the dearth of quality attackers is a general problem in the league, which can only be improved gradually during training sessions.

"Lack of quality strikers is a Nigerian problem and not just Heartland FC. We will keep working and strive to improve."

Heartland FC will face Doma United on Thursday in another league tie.
