The race for the top scorer's prize in the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League season (NPFL) is now narrowed down to two players. With six rounds of games remaining in the championship, Remo Stars striker Sikiru Alimi and his Enyimba counterpart, Chijioke Mbaoma, are both tied on 14 goals each.
Alimi boosted his pursuit for the award by scoring a brace in Remo Stars' 2-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes last weekend, bringing his tally to 14 goals. Mbaoma matched this feat by converting from the penalty spot in Enyimba's 1-0 win over Katsina United in Aba on Sunday.
Both players are expected to continue their quest for the individual accolade throughout the remainder of the campaign. Alimi holds a slight advantage as his club, Remo Stars, have seven games left in the season, whereas Enyimba have six games remaining.
In the meantime, matchday 32 of the NPFL will conclude today with Bayelsa United hosting Rivers United in a regional derby at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa. A victory for the 17th-placed Bayelsa United would lift them out of the relegation zone, while Rivers United need the maximum three points to enhance their chances of returning to Continental football.
Following Tuesday's match, the NPFL will take a month-long break to accommodate Rivers United's outstanding fixtures.
