2023/2024 NPFL: Akwa Utd management issues stern warning to technical crew, players over poor league results
Posted : 24 October 2023
Given the poor run that has seen Akwa United amass only two points out of a possible twelve, the club's management has issued a stern warning to its coaching staff and players.
During a meeting convened to assess the team's performance in the ongoing 2023-24 Nigeria Premier Football League season, the club's management urged the technical staff and players to "swiftly rectify the current situation."
Elder Paul Bassey, the club's chairman, expressed regret for the "severe emotional distress our dedicated fans have endured, and we sincerely apologize to them, urging you to promptly address the situation, perhaps even by the next match in Benin."
He commended the club's loyal fans, who believe "things will soon turn around," while stressing that the sooner, the better.
"We are a club steeped in tradition with a winning mindset. We don't participate in the league just for the sake of participation.
"We compete to win titles and qualify for continental competitions, as our record over the past five seasons can attest.
"We, the management of Akwa United Football Club, are concerned about the current state of our club after going four matches without a victory.
"Our recent results are simply unacceptable. Our fans and supporters deserve the best from us for their unwavering support and encouragement, and we must enhance our performance to secure positive outcomes in our upcoming matches.
"As the management of this club, we have made the welfare of our players a top priority. We do not owe any of the club's staff because we promptly pay salaries and bonuses.
"As a club, we lack nothing, thanks to the support provided by the government of Pastor Umo Eno.
"Our players have no excuses for not performing well; they must rise to the occasion and be accountable. They must demonstrate increased commitment, dedication, discipline, and focus while representing this club.
"Our players and coaches must consistently perform at their best to achieve our season's goal, which is to win the league, just as we did in 2021."
"With only two points from four matches, Akwa United finds itself at the bottom of the table and will strive to secure its first victory of the season this weekend when facing Bendel Insurance in Benin," he stated.
