2023/2024 NNL: Nasarawa Utd earns first win of season

Posted : 13 November 2023
Lafia-based Nasarawa United FC began their journey in the 2023/24 season of the Nigeria National League (NNL24) with a narrow 1-0 victory over Zamfara United in the Northern Conference Fixtures at Lafia City Stadium on Sunday.

The Lafia City Stadium took center stage, substituting the Uyo Township Stadium as the venue for the opener.

Nasarawa United seized an early lead in the game, with Aminu Abubakar delivering a remarkable volley in the box just nine minutes into play, establishing the score at 1-0. The Solid Miners effectively preserved their advantage throughout the first half.

Despite Zamfara United’s attempts to equalize in the second half, Nasarawa United’s defenders remained resolute, foiling every endeavor and maintaining the 1-0 lead until the final whistle.

This win signifies a promising start for Nasarawa United in the Northern Conference Group C opener of the NNL season, as the Solid Miners aim for a swift return after last season’s NPFL relegation.

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State graced the NNL season opener, participating in the ceremonial kick-off alongside his Deputy, Dr. Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe. The event also witnessed the presence of former Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, Secretary to the State Government Barr. Aliyu Ubandoma, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Jafaru Ango, and other government officials.

Additionally, distinguished guests included Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development Barr. Isaac Danladi, representatives from the Nigeria Football Federation led by NFF Secretary-General Dr. Sanusi Muhammad, and Board Members of the Nigeria National League chaired by George Aluo. Dr. Othman Ibrahim Ahmed, Chairman of Nasarawa United FC, was also in attendance.

With the season officially underway, the remaining Matchday 1 games in the Southern and Northern Conferences are set for the upcoming weekend at various centers nationwide.
