2022/2023 NPFL Super 6 play-offs: Defending Champions, Rivers Utd FC ends Bendel Insurances' 26 unbeaten run

Posted : 10 June 2023
Bendel Insurance's record of 26 unbeaten streak in all competitions was on Friday ended by the defending champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Rivers United at the ongoing NPFL Super 6 play-offs in Lagos.

Africa Sports Network (ASN) reports that Bendel Insurance tasted the first defeat of the season after running a new record of 26 unbeaten in all competitions at the 2022/2023 season.

The Super 6 play-offs Match Day 6 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos had Rivers United and Bendel Insurance playing against each other for the first time this season.

The Pride of Rivers have yet to lose any of the last NPFL Super 6 Play-offs, having won one match and have two draws, while the Benin Arsenals drew all their three matches.

The Pride of Rivers were able to dislodge the Benin Arsenals 2-1, courtesy goals from Maurice Chukwu and Joseph Onoja, while Divine Nwanchukwu produced the consolatory goal for the Monday Osagie-tutored team.

The first half of the game produced sparks of football as both teams were unrelenting in their efforts at goal, after which Rivers Unites FC'S Chukwu found the back of the net exactly at two minutes added to 45 minutes.

The defending champions coached by Stanley Eguama doubled lead once again at the last gap of 90 minutes as substitute Joseph Onoja found a loose ball in the 18-yard box to slot home the second goal of the day.

Just as the time was ticking away at the 95th minute, the newly invited player to Super Eagles team, Nwanchukwu, bagged his third goal of the NPFL Super 6 campaign with a beautiful header.

The result now returns Rivers United to the summit of the NPFL Super 6 table with 8 points having won two games and drawn two games.

Bendel Insurance on the other hand are left with only three points from four games having drawn three matches and lost one.
