Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface is no longer a guaranteed starter for Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen.
Since recovering from injury in late January, the Nigerian forward has played just 141 minutes across seven league games, struggling to regain his spot in Xabi Alonso’s starting lineup.
During his absence, Alonso has relied on alternative attacking options, including Nathan Tella, Patrick Schick, and Amine Adli.
Several reasons have contributed to Boniface’s reduced role at Die Werkself, and here are three key factors influencing his current situation in Germany.
Tactical Adjustments
Boniface initially excelled as a target man when he arrived at Leverkusen, thriving in Alonso’s system that utilized a central striker as the focal point in attack.
However, since the start of the year, Alonso has implemented a more fluid and dynamic playing style to maintain consistency and strengthen their title challenge against Bayern Munich.
This tactical shift has led to a preference for a mobile attacking structure that does not rely on a traditional center-forward, making it harder for Boniface to fit into the system.
Pressing and Work Rate
Beyond the tactical changes, Alonso’s current approach requires high energy and defensive contributions from his attacking players.
Nathan Tella, in particular, has excelled in this role, using his pressing ability to win possession and help the team defensively.
His work rate, adaptability, and quick transitions have made him an essential player, often getting the nod ahead of Boniface.
Tella’s ability to stretch defenses and create space has been vital in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title pursuit.
Competition from In-Form Forwards
Despite scoring ten goals across all competitions this season, Boniface has struggled to reclaim his starting position due to the strong performances of other attackers.
Patrick Schick, who stepped up in his absence, has been in prolific form, netting 16 league goals.
Meanwhile, Nathan Tella has also impressed, recently finding the net against Eintracht Frankfurt.
With both Schick and Tella delivering consistently, Boniface has found opportunities limited in a highly competitive squad.
As Leverkusen continue their push for the Bundesliga title, Boniface must adapt to Alonso’s evolving tactics and prove he can contribute effectively in a fluid attacking system.
His chances of reclaiming a starting role may depend on injuries, squad rotation, or a resurgence in form that forces Alonso to reassess his lineup.
For now, the Nigerian striker faces a tough battle to regain his place in the first XI.
