12th Optima Energy Gold Cup kicks off in Ikenne on Thursday

Defending champions Beyond Limits will begin their title defense against ASVO FC of Benin Republic, as the 12th edition of the Optima Energy Gold Cup pre-season tournament kicks off in Ikenne and Sagamu.


Both Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne and FC Ebedei Stadium in Sagamu will be abuzz starting from Thursday, August 15, with exciting football action from intriguing fixtures in Groups A and B, which were released on Tuesday by the organizers of the nation's prestigious pre-season tournament.


Six other teams joining Shooting Stars include the newly-promoted Ikorodu City, Osun United, and FC Ebedei in Group B.


Ijebu United and Kasam FC, completing Group A, are set to face Beyond Limits.


The first game of Match Day 1 features a challenging tie between debutants Kasam FC and the previous edition's runners-up, Ijebu United, at the Remo Stars Stadium.


The opening day of Group B on Friday, August 16, will see FC Ebedei tackle Osun United in an 8 a.m. fixture.


The organizers have saved the best for last, as a Nigeria Premier Football League cracker will see Ikorodu City lock horns with Shooting Stars at 3 p.m.


Tunde Shamsudeen, the tournament's General Coordinator, said, "The Optima Energy Gold Cup has become a sought-after off-season tournament for top clubs in the NPFL, NNL, and business-oriented NLO teams who want to be part of it.


"We are delighted that in the last 11 editions, teams have used the Optima Energy Gold Cup platform to build their squad of players, with a view to playing expansive football and entertaining their fans during the season.


"Above all, we are proud of the success stories of the teams that have participated in our editions and have gone on to win the NPFL title—Kano Pillars in 2016, who qualified for the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup; gained promotion (defending champions Beyond Limits); and talented players using the platform as a career pathway to the big leagues in Europe.


"The Optima Energy Gold Cup matches have always left fans on the edge of their seats, so interesting fixtures await them.


"Fans can livestream matches of their teams on our YouTube channel via their devices from their comfort zones and also keep track of their teams on the SofaScore App."
