The defending champions of the football event at the All University Games, Kenyatta University, on Monday overcame a pulsating 1-1 draw against co-host Lagos State University (LASU) to record a convincing 2-0 win over the University of Ghana.
The 11th edition of the All Africa University Games (FASU) is taking place at both campuses of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and LASU in Ojo.
Kenyatta University had earlier played to a 1-1 draw against co-host LASU in their first match of the football event.
The match, played at the Sports Centre of LASU, saw both teams displaying good football artistry to the delight of fans.
Despite some incursions into each other's goal area, neither team managed to score in the first half.
The second half of the game saw the East Africans becoming more purposeful, leading to their opening goal by Price Musebe deep into the second half.
The goal energized the Ghanaians, but the agile goalkeeper of Kenyatta University, Felix Ochen, ensured the West Africans did not equalize.
To compound the woes of the Ghanaians, a penalty awarded to them after a Video Assistant Review of an infraction in the Kenyan goal area was saved by Ochen. About two minutes later, the defending champions scored another goal through Joshua Gichana, putting the game beyond the University of Ghana.
Speaking on the match, the coach of Kenyatta University, Joseph Rama, said that the strategy he adopted after their first match helped his players overcome the ambitious Ghanaians.
“You know that when you’re in a competition as defending champions, you’ll be under a lot of pressure because every team wants to beat you.
“So, when we played to a 1-1 draw with LASU in our first game, I told my players not to panic or feel unnecessary pressure, and that worked out for us.”
Coach Rama, who stated that his target is to do well in the competition, also noted that he will take each game as it comes while commending the hosts for the excellent sports facilities available at the University.
