Toronto 2023 Overwatch League Playoffs and Grand Finals feature four semifinalists
Posted : 17 July 2023
The 2023 Overwatch League (OWL) Playoffs and Grand Finals are set to be held on LAN in Toronto, Canada, from September 28th to October 1st. The prestigious event will feature four semifinalists competing at Toronto's Mattamy Athletic Centre, vying for the opportunity to secure a spot in the finals.
The ultimate champions of the 2023 season will not only claim the coveted championship trophy but also win a substantial prize money of $1 million (~£763,000). The runner-up will receive $400,000 (~£305,000) as a reward for their efforts.
This season's OWL format underwent significant changes, introducing Spring and Summer stages that allowed non-franchised teams to compete against established franchises for the first time. Despite the changes, the tradition of holding the finals in North America continues for the 2023 season.
The event will be technically hosted by the OWL franchise, the Toronto Defiant, which became a part of the league's expansion in 2019 alongside six other franchised teams.
The Toronto Defiant is under the ownership of esports conglomerate Overactive Media, which also holds the European organization Mad Lions. Overactive Media operates in Toronto, Madrid, and Berlin, and it is publicly traded on the Canadian TSXV exchange.
