Tennis Canada VR Tournament offers $15,000 prize pool and National Bank Open finals

Posted : 28 June 2023
Tennis Canada, the governing body for tennis in Canada, has announced its entry into esports with the upcoming Tennis Canada VR Tournament. The tournament will be played on the Tennis Esports game and will feature a prize pool of CAD $15,000 (£8,900). The top two winners will be flown to Canada to compete in the finals at the National Bank Open, a prestigious ATP1000 and WTA premier event.

Motorola's Razr subbrand of foldable smartphones will serve as the headline sponsor for the tournament. While no specific activations have been announced for the finals, Motorola's involvement will likely contribute to the overall experience.

This marks Tennis Canada's first venture into esports, and the tournament format is quite unique. It is open to all interested players, but participants must meet certain requirements, including owning a VR headset and equipment like the Oculus Quest 2.

The selected game for the tournament, Tennis Esports, has been chosen for its exceptional virtual gameplay in VR. Tennis Canada believes it offers the most realistic experience that closely resembles playing actual tennis.

The tournament will feature two game modes: Instant Match, an online multiplayer mode, and Hit'em All, a single-player arcade mode where players aim to hit targets. Participants will have the opportunity to earn tournament points in either or both modes.

The best-performing players will have a chance to win cash prizes totaling up to CAD $15,000 (£8,900). The Tennis Canada VR Tournament will culminate in the finals, held annually in Ontario and Quebec, known as the Canada Masters.

Tennis Canada's entry into esports demonstrates its willingness to explore new avenues to engage tennis fans and provide a unique experience for players through virtual reality.
