Tencent unveils major changes for PUBG MOBILE Esports in 2024

Posted : 08 December 2023

In anticipation of the 2023 PUBG MOBILE Global Championship Grand Finals, Tencent, the game's publisher, has unveiled significant changes to its 2024 esports season, introducing the PUBG Mobile Global Open (PMGO) as a new global event scheduled for March 2024 in Brazil, featuring a generous $500,000 prize pool.

The regional esports landscape will also see major alterations, with the PUBG MOBILE Super League (PMSL) now encompassing four regions: Southeast Asia, EMEA (Europe, the Middle East & Africa), Americas, and Central & South Asia, each hosting multiple seasons.

James Yang, Senior Director of PUBG MOBILE Global Esports, detailed the 2024 esports roadmap during a press conference, outlining three global events: PUBG MOBILE Global Championship (PMGC), the enhanced PUBG Mobile World Invitational (PMWI) midseason tournament, and the newly introduced PUBG Mobile Global Open.

The expansion of the esports ecosystem aims to provide increased opportunities for partnership teams to showcase their talent and offer community teams an additional platform to compete at the highest level. PMSL will replace PUBG Mobile Pro League (PMPL) as the premier competition for regional leagues, with plans for offline events in each league.

Southeast Asia (SEA) is set to have three PMSL seasons in 2024, while EMEA, Americas, and Central & South Asia will each have two seasons, with SEA's additional season attributed to the earlier development of the esports ecosystem in the region.

Yang suggested the potential for three seasons in other regions, though no confirmation has been provided. The esports structure will include PMSL regional qualifiers, enabling amateur teams to showcase their talents and compete against professionals, as well as smaller regional leagues and tournaments, including the PUBG Mobile Club Open (PMCO).

Earlier this month, PUBG revealed plans to expand its esports partner programme for 2024 to include 10 teams, currently undergoing a valuation process, with the selection round open until December 15th, 2023. The new lineup of partner teams will be unveiled in January 2024, receiving direct invitations to the PMGO in 2024, along with regional PMSL qualifiers and hosting region qualifiers.
