Students' interest in esports spikes in schools, according to Intel and Dell reports

Posted : 09 June 2023
A report conducted by Dr Eliza Filby in collaboration with the British Esports Federation reveals that more than half of UK students consider an esports qualification to be as valuable as a traditional subject like mathematics.

The study, sponsored by US chipmaker Intel and computing brand Dell, surveyed 700 students. It found that 53% of the participants believe or strongly believe that esports skills would be beneficial to them. Additionally, 56% agreed that obtaining an esports qualification alongside other subjects could enhance their chances of admission to university.

The report highlights that 78% of UK students between the ages of 11 and 17 engage in gaming activities, with many indicating that their passion for gaming has influenced their interests in other areas such as content creation.

Esports emerged as the preferred extracurricular activity, surpassing conventional pursuits like dance, drama, and art.

Of those surveyed, 41% expressed their willingness to pursue an esports qualification if it were offered, citing potential benefits such as critical thinking, acquiring new skills, and improving communication abilities.

The research reflects the growing trend of incorporating esports into UK schools, ranging from partnerships between Scottish schools and local colleges to establish esports curriculums, to initiatives like the collaboration between independent training provider Virtual Learning UK and Belong Gaming Arenas in launching an esports BTEC qualification.

Similar research commissioned by Dell and Intel in March 2022 revealed that over two-thirds of UK parents believe that esports enables their children to develop skills not typically acquired through traditional education methods. Additionally, 54% of parents acknowledged that esports helps boost their children's confidence.
