Sean Smith Named CEO of Tribe Gaming as Founder Patrick Carney Transitions to Chief Strategy Officer

Sean Smith, previously the Head of Strategy and Business Operations for Activision Blizzard Esports, has been promoted to CEO of the mobile-focused esports organization Tribe Gaming. This change, decided last month, sees Tribe Gaming’s founder, Patrick Carney, transition to the role of Chief Strategy Officer.

Smith joined Tribe Gaming in 2023 as Chief Operating Officer (COO). With a robust background in business leadership, Smith has experience working with NBA teams such as the Washington Wizards and the Orlando Magic, followed by a significant tenure in Activision Blizzard’s esports division lasting over four years.

Expressing his gratitude, Smith said, “I am both humbled and honoured to have been entrusted with the role of CEO, leading this incredible team on our exciting journey forward. Founded in 2017 by Patrick Carney, also known as ‘Chief Pat’, and Jon Sakoucky, Tribe Gaming is a North American esports organization that specializes in mobile esports titles such as Brawl Stars, Call of Duty: Mobile, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans.

The organization has formed partnerships with prominent companies like Samsung Electronics America and AT&T. Earlier this year, Tribe and AT&T transformed an RV into a mobile gaming hub, the Tribe Mobile Club House, designed for the organization’s content creators and fans.

Patrick Carney, who has led Tribe Gaming since its inception, has now taken on the role of Chief Strategy Officer. In this position, Carney will spearhead specific strategic initiatives and business units, along with managing investor relations. He will remain a key figure on the leadership team and Board of Directors.

Reflecting on Smith’s new role, Carney said, “Since joining Tribe late last year, Sean has proven to be an incredible leader and steward of the business.
