Riot Games and LCSPA agree to return 2023 LCS Summer Split
Posted : 11 June 2023
After an agreement was reached between Riot Games, the LCSPA (League of Legends Championship Series Players Association), and the teams, the delayed 2023 LCS Summer Split is set to make its return on June 14th.
The Summer Split was initially postponed for two weeks following a player walkout organized by the LCSPA. The walkout occurred in response to Riot Games' decision to modify the NACL (North American Challenger League) mandate, allowing LCS organizations the choice to withdraw from the previously mandatory tier-two competition. Seven out of ten organizations chose to withdraw.
Following discussions between Riot Games, the LCSPA, and a representative from the teams, a deal has been reached to resume the league, as confirmed by Riot Games and the LCSPA.
As part of the new agreement, a revised NACL business model has been introduced. This model supplements the initial commitment of $300,000 (approximately £240,000) with a revenue-sharing system between the tournament operator and participating teams. The LCSPA stated that 50% of all NACL sponsorship revenue will now be shared with teams. Riot Games mentioned that this approach aims to promote long-term sustainability.
The agreement also includes additional assurances for players. Players earning up to 1.5 times the league's minimum salary will now be guaranteed 30 days of severance pay and notice. Non-resident LCS players must be given a minimum of two weeks' notice. Teams are allowed to negotiate additional terms beyond these requirements, according to Riot.
Riot Games also highlighted improvements to the NACL governance model, such as the implementation of a Team Participating Agreement (TPA) and a thorough vetting process for participating team organizations.
In an effort to prevent similar situations in the future, Riot Games committed to refining the working procedures between the LCS, the LCSPA, and the teams. They also plan to establish a working group between teams and the LCSPA to optimize scrimmage schedules.
The LCSPA expressed in a statement that concessions were made by Riot and the teams to ensure a more sustainable future for the NACL and a fairer voice for players in their workplace. They believe that today's announcement emphasizes the importance of giving players a meaningful role in decision-making processes.
