Players voted to walkout in protest of Riot Games changes
Posted : 30 May 2023
A walkout has been approved by LCS players in opposition to recent adjustments Riot Games made to the LCS's academy circuit.
The action, a first in esports, was taken in spite of the LCS's lack of official unionisation as the premier North American League of Legends esports league.
The LCS Players Association (LCSPA) called for the vote, which it claims "overwhelmingly passed," after League of Legends publisher and LCS operator Riot Games abolished the requirement that clubs field academy rosters in the North American Challenger League (NACL).
Two senior executives at LCS organisations claim that LCS teams, which include groups like Team Liquid, 100 Thieves, and Cloud9, have been lobbying Riot to provide financial assistance. According to team executives, some teams spend about $1 million (£810,000) annually on their youth rosters.
According to Phillip Aram, executive director of the LCS Players Association (LCSPA), if the majority of LCS players vote in favour of the walkout, the league won't begin play on June 1st. The number of players that voted in favour of the walkout is unknown, despite the LCSPA's claim that it was unanimously approved.
