OverActive Media announces significant agreement with Overwatch League for popular game Overwatch
Posted : 06 June 2023
OverActive Media, a Canadian company specializing in esports and gaming, recently announced a significant development. They have successfully negotiated an agreement with the Overwatch League (OWL), a franchised league for the game Overwatch operated by Activision Blizzard.
Within this agreement, OverActive disclosed that their OWL franchise, Toronto Defiant, has secured a sponsorship deal with the league. Furthermore, OverActive revealed that the Overwatch League has agreed to waive the outstanding fees that Toronto Defiant had previously owed for joining the league. This arrangement is estimated to be valued at approximately CAD$10.8 million (equivalent to £6.5 million).
In addition to Toronto Defiant, OverActive Media owns other valuable entities such as the Call of Duty League franchise, Toronto Ultra, and the European esports organization, MAD Lions. The company operates across multiple locations including Toronto, Madrid, and Berlin, and its shares are publicly traded on the Canadian TSXV exchange.
It is worth noting that Activision Blizzard, the developer behind Overwatch, was owed a substantial amount of money by the teams themselves. According to a report by Jacob Wolf in May 2022, each team owed approximately $6-7.5 million, resulting in a cumulative total of $120-150 million.
